Voltage regulation

What is a voltage regulator? It is a circuit whose task is, as the name suggests, to regulate the voltage and thus stabilize the voltage at the output. When a reliable voltage source is required, we reach for example for an inverter with a shunt resistor. Its construction is very simple. It works on the principle of negative feedback. The advantages of linear regulators are low electromagnetic interference and noise, constant output voltage and low purchase cost.

Types of regulators

Regulators can be roughly divided into two types - series voltage regulators and shunt resistor inverters. A series regulator has a variable transistor whose resistance varies on the input voltage and keeps the output voltage constant. The shunt regulator works similarly to the series regulator, and all excess is grounded. Shunt resistor converters are mainly used for precision current limiters, error amplifiers or voltage monitoring.

Setting up the regulator

To check the voltage of any shunt regulator or potentiometer voltage setting, apply a higher voltage using a current limiting resistor of several hundred ohms and measure the voltage on the regulator. Inverters with a shunt resistor should be set to approximately 10% above the supply voltage. There are regulators with varying values available in our store.
