Every hardware and software designer knows perfectly well that "time is money". Therefore, the time saved on the project is an additional profit. This is the reason why today’s electronics is based on ready-to-implement hardware modules, for example sub-GHz RF transceivers, WiFi or Bluetooth modules as well as sophisticated OEM devices intended to use in given areas of technology. This is also true for more advanced modules called SBC (single board computers). These tiny, but powerful devices are based on high performance processors, built-in RAM memories and even Flash memory chips and allow developers to run high level software applications under control of various operating systems – from Linux (for example Ubuntu, Debian or Raspbian) to Android and Windows (well known from “bigger” mobile devices and computers). One of the most important advantages of SBCs is availability of many expansion ports, usually called “GPIO” (general purpose input-output) and serial communication interfaces (UART, SPI, I2C, I2S and sometimes more). Raspberry Pi – probably the most famous SBC in the world

Raspberry Pi is one of the first single board minicomputers widely available on the market and probably the most famous one all over the world. The commercial success of the project can be explained by a great combination of high computational power, hardware flexibility, ease of integration with external circuitry and, of course, really affordable price. Today Raspberry Pi product line includes high performance, mainstream boards (like the most recent Raspberry Pi 4 Model B), as well as ultra-low cost, miniature modules like Raspberry Pi Zero WH. Every Rapsberry Pi SBC is based on a Broadcom SoC chip, containing a powerful ARM processor, a graphics accelerator and a high-speed connectivity features. The boards come with different amounts of built-in RAM memory and some of them, called Raspberry Pi Compute Module, also have an on-board eMMC memory. Newest Raspberry Pi 4 Model B allows you to connect up to two separate HDMI screens and can be used as a regular PC taking just a little part of the space on the desk compared to a regular computer.

BeagleBone – minicomputers that change the game

Another interesting part of our offer is a BeagleBone family. These single boards minicomputers are quite different from Raspberry Pi described above. BeagleBone modules are equipped with much more GPIO lines available for the user and are based on another SoC processor – for example the TI Sitara AM335x. A big advantage of this chip is that it have two built-in programmable real-time units (PRU). This solution is ideal for real-time control applications (for example: motor controllers, high-speed measurement equipment, etc.) demanding low latency, high responsibility and independence from main operating system, handled with application processor. BeagleBone modules are available in a few versions with or without on-board wireless connectivity. One of these SBCs called BeagleBone Black Industrial is dedicated for applications working in harsh environments and offers temperature range of -40 oC to +85 oC.

Other minicomputers for embedded applications and prototyping

Asus Tinker Board S is based on ARM Cortex-A17 quad-core 32-bit processor running at up to 1.8 GHz clock frequency. The board contains 2GB of LPDDR3 RAM, 16 GB of built-in eMMC memroy, a Gigabit Ethernet port as well as WiFi + Bluetooth module, four USB ports and 40-pin GPIO header. Another SBC utilizing a form factor known from Raspberry Pi family is an Odroid C4 minicomputer based on Amlogic S905X3 SoC with quad-core ARM Cortex-A55 processor (2 GHz) and 4 GB of DDR4 RAM. This device can work under the newest 20.04 release of popular Ubuntu operating system as well as under Android Pie 9.0 OS.
