Thanks to great flexibility and the possibility of programming with the use of applications downloaded from the Red Pitaya Bazaar market, there is a wide range of programs that allow to turn the device into an oscilloscope, generator, spectrum analyzer, LCR meter, as well as an array antenna controller (MIMO 2x2) with a bandwidth bigger than 50 MHz.

Versatile measuring tool for your computer

Xilinx SoC Zynq 7010 is the heart of Red Pitaya. SoC, System-on-a-chip, is a whole computer system in one integrated circuit. Such a circuit contains both CPU and RAM. Non-volatile memory, in the case of Red Pitaya it is a microSD card, is connected peripherally. Xilinx Zynq Xilinx SoC circuits, apart from CPU and other mentioned elements, offer in their structure the FPGA programmable system, which significantly increases their capabilities, especially in terms of analysis, processing and generation of high-frequency signals.

SoC Xilinx Zynq 7010

This circuit has a dual-core CPU using ARM Cortex-A9+ cores with clock frequency of 666 MHz. Depending on the version, the computer with Red Pitaya can be equipped with 256 MB or 512 MB of RAM. Thanks to the microSD card you can connect to the system up to 32GB of non-volatile memory with an operating system (Linux) and applications. You can also save data collected by the circuit. Thanks to a programmable circuit built in SoC, it is possible to activate dedicated hardware accelerators for specific operations so that Red Pitaya can quickly perform operations required during the work such as, for example, software-defined radio (SDR).

Wide range of measurement options thanks to additional card possibilities

Red Pitaya board can be reprogrammed to convert it into other devices because all the input and output ports of the device are connected to the same programmable circuit (FPGA) that is the center of the system. The system is also equipped with extra ADCs. Additionally, Red Pitaya offers three USB 2.0, Wifi and Ethernet ports. It uses Linux so programming and uploading new applications is relatively easy for anyone who is familiar with this operating system.

Open source software offering a wide range of possibilities, also as an SDR

Due to the wide bandwidth of ADCs and DACs, Red Pitaya can also be used as a programmable receiver and radio transmitter. There are open applications that are available and that enable to use Red Pitaya as software defined radio. Open source software is a great advantage of this module, although you should remember that even though the Red Pitaya software (including HDL source code) is available for free, the device is not a completely Open Source Hardware project, because the circuit diagrams of the device are not publicly available.
