Single-board minicomputers (SBC) are great solution for embedded designers due to high computational performance and ease of custom software implementation. Typical SBC contains all of the critical components that are essential for every kind of computer: a powerful processor, RAM memory and some kind of storage memory – most often microSD card and/or eMMC. Red Pitaya – the whole electronics lab at your fingertips!

Design of Red Pitaya PCB jest based on powerful Xilinx Zynq 7010 SoC containing ARM Cortex A9 CPU+ combined with high-speed FPGA intended to use in parallel processing and generation of analog signals. The SBC includes bulilt-in 512 MB DDR3 RAM and a microSD slot that acts as a data storage for OS, apps and user data. PCB dimensions are only 107 x 60 x 21 mm but the board is populated with a lot of connectors: Ethernet RJ45, two microUSB ports (one for external power supply adaptor and the other for console), one USB A vertical socket, two Sync connectors (for daisy-chain interconnections), two IDC connectors (100 mils pitch) and four high-quality SMA edge connectors for on-board RF front-end. Red Pitaya can work with machines running most popular operating systems: Linux, Windows and iOS. The board also supports Matlab and LabVIEW environments, so it’s great choose for various research projects demanding some high-speed hardware-related functionality.

Flexible RF front-end and powerful applications from Bazaar store

The most important advantage of Red Pitaya design is huge flexibility of build-in high-frequency analog front-end. It contains two inputs with user-selectable voltage range (+/- 1V or +/-20 V) and sampling frequency of up to 125 MSps. The vertical resoultion of on-board analog-to-digital converters is 14 bit, so Red Pitaya greatly fits even more sophisticated measurement needs. The two RF outputs also can work at sampling frequency up to 125 MHz @ 14 bit vertical resolution. Because all of the measurement functionality is softwareo-defined using flexibility given by FPGA matrix and no blocks are hardwired for speficic purpose, the user can benefit from true software-defined lab instruments.
