STM32 microcontrollers use 32-bit ARM cores. The first introduced series of processors, STM32F1, is based on ARM Cortex-M3 design, however, the next ones use newer cores such as ARM Cortex-M4, M0 and M0+. The newest modules from the STM32F7 family incorporate the ARM Cortex-M7 core which is now one of the most powerful and technically advanced available designs of microcontrollers. STM32 offers a wide range of analog peripherals, including high-speed ADCs with 12-bit resolution and 1 Msps sampling frequency, DACs (also 12-bit) and high-speed digital comparators. Among digital peripherals which are extremely flexible (and numerous!) we can mention hardware timers and a wide range of communication interfaces (USART, UART, SPI, I2C, I2S, CAN, USB - including OTG - or Ethernet). Universal memory controllers, DMA, reset and clock control (RCC), CSS as well as advanced controllers to support LCD and cameras or graphic accelerators are really invaluable.
A particularly important advantage of STM32 is the abundance of both cases and built-in flash and RAM memory. In some of the models (e.g. STM32F0) there are tiny 20-pin TSSOP20 or WLCSP25 cases, however, LQFP32, LFQP48, LFQP64 and LFQP100 are the most popular and can be found in almost all of the STM32 product lines. The most complex systems - especially those belonging to the STM32F4 and STM32F7 series - are also available in the LQFP144, 176 or 208, UFBGA or TFBGA cases. Even microcontrollers from the same series and in the same cases are available in several variants, differing in terms of their memory (Flash, RAM) and, of course, price.
