Rechargeable Li-Ion Batteries

Li-Ion batteries have a liquid electrolyte, which distinguishes them from Li-Pol batteries, which use gel or solid cells. It has two electrodes, one of which is made of metal oxides and the other of carbon. Lithium-ion batteries are commonly used in electronic equipment, including modern smartphones and mobile laptops. They are also one of the most popular energy sources for robots and electronics. The first lithium batteries appeared on the market in 1970, but the breakthrough for lithium-ion batteries came in 1979. However, the commercial lithium-ion battery was not available until 1991. It was used in Sony brand cameras, followed by a rapid increase in interest in this power source and other electronics companies followed in the footsteps of the Japanese company. Today Li-Ion batteries are used much more often. They are mainly appreciated for high cell voltage of 3.6V.

How is the Li-Ion battery constructed?

Li-Ion batteries are made of a cell to store energy. It consists of electrodes, electrolyte and separator. Although it is possible for the cell to function independently as a battery, this is not used in practice as there is a high risk of overheating. Most often the cell is cylindrical in shape, although other types of cells are also used, which, however, are much less common. In most cases it is 18 mm in diameter and 65 mm in length. The capacity of such cells reaches 3500 mAh. The parameters of a cell are determined to a significant extent by its chemical structure. The most common version is lithium-cobalt. Other materials are also used to build the cells, among them aluminium and manganese.

Lithium-ion batteries consist of different number of cells, which differs from each other by specific proposals. Most of them are cells arranged in series in higher voltage. For example, the 3S2P designation means that there are 3 cells in the battery in series and 2 parallel. There are definitely more cells in a powerful battery, even 7000.

Performance of lithium-ion batteries

How long a lithium-ion battery will last depends on its capacity and energy consumption. For capacity, which we mean in mAh, the more technologically advanced the design, the higher this value should be. In the case of a laptop, the maximum battery capacity is about 4400 mAh. The power consumption, in turn, results from many factors. If we are dealing with a device in which we use a screen, its brightness is very important. The operating time will also vary depending on the age of the device itself. We must also consider the consumption of the processor, if it is in the device. You have to be aware that the batteries wear out and are susceptible to ageing. This is influenced by the quality of the battery, but also the intensity of use. You may find that the same battery will work well for 2 years in one case and up to 5 years in another. That is why it is important to adapt the lithium-ion battery to the specific device, operating conditions and its purpose and frequency of use.

Li-Ion batteries have twice the capacity of NiMH. That is why they have gained such popularity and met with such great interest of robots and electronics. Moreover, they lack the so-called memory effect, which we know from older models of mobile phones. We were then required to discharge and recharge the device 3 times after purchasing it in order for the battery to reach its highest efficiency.

We offer a wide range of Li-Ion batteries with an output voltage of 3.7V. They differ in capacity, among the available proposals you will find batteries 800 mAh, 2200 mAh, 2600 mAh and 3500 mAh. We work only with well-known trusted manufacturers, so in the shop you will find products from Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, OEM and XTAR.
