The process of creating characters on the LCD display - how it works...
LCD displays are characterized by a specific functionality, which seems to be a complicated process. Single characters are displayed on the matrix. The matrix can have dimensions of 5x7 or 5x8, with the first number informing about the number of columns and the second about the number of rows. However, it should be kept in mind that usually the eighth character is not filled up, it remains empty. It serves as a field for the flashing cursor. The LCD display technology uses warm crystal technology. As a result of the magnetic field created, the position of the particles changes. This type of display is much more powerful than other similar solutions. They can display letters, numbers, special characters and even graphic symbols and animations. This distinguishes LCD displays from segmented displays and single LEDs. In LCD displays there are usually two registers. The first is a data register, while the second is a command register. The displays work in two modes, namely 4 and 8-bit. The registers are equipped with 3-4 lines, as well as 8 data lines, which are responsible for communication between the display and the microcontroller.
The size of the LCD display matters
LCD displays come in different sizes, which is one of the factors to be considered when choosing the right one. The most frequently selected sizes are 2x8, 2x16 and 4x20. The first digit indicates the number of lines, while the second digit indicates the number of characters that will fit into each single line. So in case of 2x8 LCD display we have 2 lines at our disposal and each of them will have maximum 8 characters. Beginner designer of control and automation systems should decide on the most optimal variant, i.e. 2x16 display. For more experienced electronics and robotics we recommend larger displays, in size 4x20. On such a display we can display more information at one time.
LCD displays also differ in backlighting, it can be in several colors. Most often it is green or blue. However, there are models with orange, yellow or red backlight. This affects the ease of reading data.
The Botland store offers alphanumeric and graphic displays in various variants. We recommend self-assembly sets designed to connect the display to a mini computer.
